Introduction | |
MACBA Foundation is a private entity promoted in 1987 by a broad cross-section of Spanish civil society. Since that year, in the firm conviction that a city with an artistic and avantgarde background like Barcelona should have an internationally recognised contemporary art museum, the thirty-seven members of the Board and the thirty-three Founder Companies, with their generous contributions, marked the beginning of the future MACBA permanent art collection.
FMACBA is a non-profit organisation, autonomously and independently managed, and its task is to do with the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, with which it works in close cooperation. It represents civil society in the MACBA Consortium, the governing body of the Museum, which includes members of the Catalan Government, Barcelona Council and the Spanish Government.
Most of the Founder Companies continue to accredit, with notable periodic gifts, their confidence in the entity, which also has a growing number of private individuals and companies that help to consolidate the work undertaken by the founders.
Twenty years after its constitution, the Foundation has brought MACBA over 2000 works of art. It still persists in its purpose of enlarging the Collection year by year.

The Workshop | |
In 1997 the Board of MACBA Foundation decided to set up a working party consisting of young people from the worlds of culture and business who would bring new ideas and dynamism to the Foundation. Thus the MACBA Foundation Workshop was created with two basic goals: to procure funds that will enable the institution to perform its task of acquisition of works for the Collection, and to help strengthen the presence of MACBA in society.
Today the Workshop has thirty six members who carry out different activities, such as the organisation of an annual fundraising event, visits to exhibitions at MACBA with commentaries by the curators, colloquium-dinners with leading figures from the art world, children’s programmes designed to make them more familiar with art and, lastly, the organisation of cultural trips to different places around the world which are extended to all associates of FMACBA.
The Workshop is made up of:

Task | |
At the founding event held on 6 May 1987 the primordial aim of FMACBA was established: the creation of a major art collection for MACBA. Nevertheless the artistic criteria of selection and formation of the Collection are the competence of the director of the Museum, with the assistance of an Advisory Committee of recognised international prestige.
Another of the most important tasks of the Foundation is the constant promotion of the Museum and the publication of its calendar of exhibitions and activities. As a result of this joint enterprise, in recent years there has been a substantial increase in the number of visitors to all the events programmed by MACBA, which now enjoys indisputable credit all over the world.
